Theory Test Multiple Choice
The multiple choice theory test used to be a paper-based exam, but now you use a touch-screen computer to answer the questions.
Before starting the multiple choice test you will be allowed fifteen minutes to practice using the computer. This practice session explains how you work through the multiple choice test and how you can choose your answers. During this time, staff will be available to help if you have any Touch Screen Theory Test problems or questions.
There are 50 questions in the test and you need to answer 44 correctly to pass. You must answer each question. You are allowed 60 minutes for the test.
Each question in the test has several optional answers, with a box alongside each. All you have to do is touch the box against each correct answer. Some questions ask you to select more than one answer. If you are unsure of the answer to a particular question you can 'flag' it and go back to it when you have finished the other questions.
Once you have finished answering the 50 multiple choice questions you will have the option to take a 3 minute break before starting the hazard perception element of the theory test. You cannot leave your desk during this break.
You must pass the MULTIPLE CHOICE and the HAZARD PERCEPTION sections to pass your theory test!!
To cancel your theory test you must give 3 clear working days notice or you'll lose your fee
Preparing for your Theory Test
Although you have to pass your theory test before you can take your practical test, it's recommended that you start studying for your theory test, but don't actually take it until you have some practical experience of driving.
To prepare for the multiple choice part of the theory test, we strongly recommend that you study the books from which the questions are sourced as well as the questions themselves. These books are:
  • The Highway Code – this is essential reading for all drivers. Even if you studied it when you took your car test, it's worth getting an up-to-date copy to ensure that you have the most recent advice on road safety and the laws which apply to all road users.
  • The Official TheoryTest for Car Drivers and The Official Theory Test for Motorcyclists - contain all the questions in the multiple choice part of the theory test, together with the answers and explanations.
  • Know Your Traffic Signs – this contains most of the signs and road markings that you are likely to come across.
  • Driving – the essential skills – this is the official reference, giving practical advice and best driving practice for all drivers.
These books will help you to answer the questions correctly and will also help you when studying for your practical test. The information in them will be relevant throughout your driving life so make sure you always have an up-to-date copy that you can refer to.
Driving Test Success All Tests (2006/07 Edition) (PC DVD) The Official Theory Test CD-ROM for Car Drivers – this is an alternative way of preparing for the multiple choice part of the theory2 CD ROMS WITH 100 CLIPS test. It contains all the questions and answers and also allows you to take mock tests.
The Official Guide to Hazard Perception (DVD) – We strongly recommend that you use this, preferably with your trainer, to prepare for the hazard perception part of the theory test. Alternatively, this is available as a VHS and booklet pack.
All the training materials listed are available by mail order from 0870 243 0123.
